Thrayambakeshwar a religious center having one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The extraordinary feature of this Jyotirlinga located here is it has three faces embodying that of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Rudra (Maheshwara/Shiva). Owing to excessive use of water for Abhishekam this Idol (Lingam) has underway to erosion. It is said that this erosion symbolizes the eroding nature of human society. The Lingams are covered with a jeweled crown which is placed over the Gold Mask of Tridev (Brahma Vishnu Mahesh). The crown is said to be from the periods of Pandeva’s and consists of diamonds, emeralds, and numerous precious stones. The crown is displayed every Monday in the evening between from 4 to 5 P M.

All other Jyotirlingas have Lord Shiv as the main deity. The entire black stone temple is known for its appealing architecture and sculpture and is at the foothills of mountain called Brahmagiri. Three sources of the Godavari originate from this Brahmagiri Mountain ranges.

There is one kunda near the temple which contains water of Godavari river. This temple has huge area and is made up of black stones with numerous small shivalingas in the small temples near the walls. The boundary is also covered with huge fort wall which was built to prevent it from Muslim kings. The two kalash of the temples are covered with Gold. This temple was completed during 16th century period & said the cost estimated incurred to build this temple was around Rs.16 lakhs. Thrayambakeshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the most unique Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas and is Swayambhu (self-manifested) huge. Mostly after Somanath and Mahakaleshar the size of Thrayambakeshwar Jyotirlinga is considered as the biggest. This Jyotirlinga does not have pindi in the middle but it has a hole in the middle and inside the hole there are three pindies of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh symbolically. And on the Pindi of Lord Shiva, Varuna Devta continuously offers Abhishek by pouring water on the Lingam – No one is aware of the fact about the origin of water which is offered as Abhisheks on Lord Shiva’s pindi, but it does. One of the miracles. But to see this Abhisheks one has to enter the Garbhagriha of Thrayambakeshwar Temple. But darshan is allowed from distance of 5 meters.

As This Jyotirlinga located little bit down below around three feet in the Garbhagriha. One has to go down through steps from the door and reach there if one desires to touch the lingam. Where as in Lord Thrayambakeshwar Jyotirlinga sanctum Santorum only one male person who performs Abhishek along with pundits are allowed to touch the lingam hence you have only to view this lingam from the entrance of the Garbhagriha itself.

Devotees can have peaceful reflective darshan and Pooja of the Lord in the mirror attached to the middle of the dome inside the temple.

One is not allowed to touch Lord Thrayambakeshwar Jyotirlinga unless you book in advance with pundit to perform Abhishek. Pundits are moving around the main temple pitching for Abhishek from pilgrims in the queue. If any individual wishes to perform Abhishek to Lord Thrayambakeshwar he has to adorn new dhoti and then only enter the Garbhagriha to perform Abhishek. And normally women folks are not allowed to enter the Garbhagriha in whatever circumstances.

Shtala Purama

Many centuries ago, this place was wih numerous maharishis and sadhus who were offering penance and also meditate here and this land was hence known as one of the thapobhumi. Sage Gautham Maharishi (one of the well-known Saptarshi) also stayed here with his Sati Ahailya. Once for 100 years this place was without rain and drought occurred and there was no water. Sage Gautham maharishi used his power of his tapobal (power of meditation) had created small pond full of water for their urgent needs .He and his spouse Sati Ahailya used to provide this water to other maharishi and their wives only for urgent needs as there was not much water in the pond. Since this was condition of the wives of other Maha rishis became jealous of this unique tapobal of Sage Gautham Rishi and they instigated their husbands to destroy and liberate Sage Gautham fame and ego. So collectively all the rishis performed Yagna and invoked Lord Ganesh requested him to incarnate as a cow and die at Sage Gautham hermitage in order for him to incur the sin of killing cow.

Lord Ganesh here warned that this is a misdeed and it will not carry out any favors. However the Maha Rishis were adamant and insisting for grant of this one wish. Lord Ganesh Granting those with a wish as fruit of their Yagna, Lord Ganesh went into Sage Gautham Ashram in the form of weak and feeble cow and when Sage Gautham Rishi went to feed this cow she died. The Maha Rishis saw this and said that sin of killing of cow occurred at Sage Gautham rishi ashram hence He & his wife Sati Ahailya by this event, In view he has to fetch holy Ganga River from heaven to wash his sin by doing penance to Lord Shiva which they felt was impossible for Sage Gautham rishi. Sage Gautham rishi along with wife Sati Ahailya commenced their meditating on Lord Shiva. Many years passed by meditating and by his enduring penance to Lord Shiva who was immensely pleased with their penance and came along with Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Ganesh with three devis, with all the Gods & Goddess present at this place to grant them a boon. Sage Gautham requested for Holy River Ganga from Lord Shiva and pleaded him to stay at this place forever to benefit of mankind. Lord Shiva hits his hair (Jataa) on the Brahmagiri Mountain and from there Holy River Ganga springs up and comes down in name of Gauthami or Godavari.

Lord Shiva along with Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma remained here in this form of Lingaa. Hence in Thrayambakeshwar there is no pindi in the lingam, there is yoni and a hole in between. Inside this hole there are three pindies denoting Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Maheshwara. This lingam is most unique among all the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva due to shape and presence of all the trinities.
